My iPhone 6s charges at home but not in the car using the same cable. At home it does make noises like it’s connecting and disconnecting sometimes. The weird thing is it doesn’t charge using my wife’s cable at home (which works fine on her phone). The phone charges only on my cable at home. At work it charges on a different cable. How can I get it to work in the car?
ive tried a soft reset and cleaning the charging port on the phone and in the car.
You have a pretty old phone and based on what you've tried, it would appear you have an issue with the charging port on your now 6 year old phone. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation and options.

However, the issue might be in your car's charging port.

Now the cable that was working isn’t. I can only get it to charge (and it’s hit and miss) on a crappy broken knockoff cable!
i didnt find the article particularly helpful. Is it the charging port or a software issue?
I had someone try changing the port and that didn’t work. It’s not the cable, it’s not the port, so what’s left? I have tried hard restart (holding power and home button) several times to no avail.
