Iphone SE2020 and contactless payment

I have recently purchased a iPhone SE and have my credit card with my apple I pay. This works as I have been able to use my Apple Pay to purchase on line using my phone and Touch ID . However, when it comes to contactless payment nothing seems to happen. When I go to my wallet, as nothing automatically comes up like on my I phone 7, the display requests a thump ring and a little icon comes up stating place by a NFC device. I place it near the payment machine, nothing happens. I have tried this at several shops, so it is likely something to do with my end of the process. I would just like to set up contactless payment.
