There are a few articles in Apple Support on these matters.
This covers most detail for connections & troubleshooting.
• Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204681
The Mac generally shares cellular &/or wi-fi from iPhone, or other direct
internet connection to sources of this specific signal. Some 'titled' items
may not apply in troubleshooting a single issue. While some require two
or more, to bridge the gap of non-connectivity.
iPhone Cellular Calls: Make and receive calls from your Mac, iPad, or iPod
touch; when those devices are on the same network as your iPhone.
• About iMessage and SMS/MMS - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207006
• Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201349
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208386
Sometimes, simply restart the Mac, unless its settings had been significantly changed.
When system upgrades may have changed defaults, go through & re-set them again.
