Why HP Officejet Pro 8100 Printer connects only with Bonjour?

MacBook Pro with MAC OS Big Sir v11.4:

After Big Sir update printer would not connect with laptop via ethernet cord or wirelessly. Search seemed to indicate printer too old for latest OS update or via AirPrint. Finally, by accident, I connected wirelessly (reset modem) with Bonjour (System preferences>printers & scanners box). If printer shows a wireless connection, select add & a 2nd page opens. Wait, then Officejet Pro 8100; Bonjour; AirPrint by use row. I'm able to use printer until I put notebook to sleep / shutdown. Then must do same process all over again when restarting laptop. The previous printer won't work so I delete it (-).

Not sure why ethernet cable from printer to laptop won't work or why AirPrint does????

An HP Officejet Pro 8100 is not listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a model supporting the driverless AirPrint technology, so I can understand that you are surprised to discover that AirPrint actually is working. There is a note in an article https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2843711-2427128-16 about Apple AirPrint for an Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter (N811), though. Possibly product variants and/or firmware upgrades with AirPrint?


You could perhaps check whether any details of interest can be found in a network configuration page or through the embedded web server (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02948312.pdf).


You mentioned a modem. Are you using a mobile broadband modem with a built-in Wi-Fi router? If so, does this modem/router have an Ethernet port? Or, are you using a DSL/cable/fibre connection with a conventional Wi-Fi router (with Ethernet LAN ports)? Was the Ethernet connection between laptop and printer direct or via a router?
