I want to print 1 or 2 or 3 of the messages in a conversation thread - not the entire long string. Nothing works - I always get the entire string, regardless if I highlight just the individual ones I want to print, or send out as a PDF. Maddening.... any solution?

Double click on the message you want to print, it will open in its own pane. Print that.

I don't have any problem printing an individual message. I don't even have a way to print the conversation.
I can either pick one from the preview pane or expand the conversation and pick one from there.
If that is not working, I don't know of any setting. Does the suggestion that Meg The Dog posted work for you? That was my only other workaround.
Given that I can find no way to print the whole conversation, do you mean that all of the quoted replies are in the message you are printing? That's the way it works. Those are part of the message. Organize by conversation just hides that part. It doesn't remove it from the message.

And I want to print the center one - "email response 1", I double click on that message and it opens in a separate pane:
With that pane selected, if I go to File > Print, I am only going to print that one message:
Is that not what is happening for you?
