Macbook Mini DisplayPort Adapter Randomly Stopped Working, Others Won't Work Either

I have a 2017 MacBook Air, using macOS Catalina (v 10.15.7). I recently bought a 27 inch Samsung monitor and I've been using it for several weeks without any issues. I connect my Macbook to the monitor using a mini DisplayPort adapter to HDMI. Again - everything worked fine for several weeks. Then, randomly, without any updates, everything stopped working. My monitor is blank (black) when connected, and my MacBook screen just goes black every second or so.

Here's everything I've tried:

  • different HDMI cables
  • restarting macbook
  • unplugging monitor (from power supply) for many minutes at a time
  • different mini displayport adapters - different brands even

Nothing works! I've spent hours browsing forums and trying random things and I can't get anything to work. Please help!!!!!

Not sure whether you have tried some of the basic troubleshooting methods on your MacBook Air and therefore I will list them here. Before you try the following, ensure that you have powered down the monitor (one more time) and then powered up. If there is a setting on your external display to return it to factory settings then please do that.

On your Mac Book Air:

  1. Reset SMC by following the directions applicable to your MacBook here ➔ How to Reset SMC. If that does not solve things then-
  2. Reset NVRAM/PRAM by following the directions applicable to your MacBook here ➔ How to Reset NVRAM/PRAM. If that does not solve things then-
  3. Enter ➔ Safe Mode and see if the issue still exists in Safe mode. Log out of Safe Mode and then reboot computer. If that does not solve things then-

One question, if none of the above works, have you tried using a direct cable rather than adapters with this display?

Is there a way to reset your external Display? Read the manual and return it to factory settings and try again. If that doesn't work then try another external monitor if you have one.

You have tried all of the steps that I listed above in my previous response. Can you try them again and ensure that they are executed perfectly? If none of those steps work then you can enter your Mac into ➔ macOS Recovery Mode and reinstall the macOS and see if that solves it.
