Same problem, newer platform.

Catalina 10.15.7 "A software update is required to connect to iPhone" but downloading "has a network problem." Same as other users, newer OS (not using iTunes).

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

Connection Issue:

There is an issue connecting the to Apple Server. So, try the following:

  1. Disconnect, then Reconnect: to the network connection
  2. Power Off: your modem/router
  3. Connect: to a different network
  4. Try this Later: (utility work may be going on down the street).
