How can I send movies (too large for email) from my Mac mini to an Ipad 1 (IOS 5) or Ipad 2 (IOS 9) ? Where would they reside so I could access them? Do I need to have the same Apple ID on both devices?

Yes! I purchased a Fire HD 7 for a trip, specifically so I could load movies onto an SD card and just play them. Worked out great!
You would probably need an SD card reader; those are fairly cheap. Consider picking up 1 of the tablets to give this a try, then purchase more if it works out :)
If you work for a non-profit, you might be able to get purchases tax-exempt also.

The iPad is a great device, and when you're looking for a "swiss army knife" type of device, it's a really good fit.
But, for single-purposes, sometimes looking elsewhere makes more sense.

I DL'd it and tried to instasll but was stoppede with this message:

BTW, these files were found after a restore from another Ipad. I didnt` load them from my Mac Mini. I couldn't find a way to do that with Finder.

Then look for a 2013 iPad Air, 1st gen.
As long as you understand that iPad year and model will never be upgrade-able beyond whatever the last IOS 12 version will be.
