cannot find airdrop files in downloads folder

I have checked my Downloads Folder from my Finder, but I cannot find recent Airdrop files anywhere. They used to show up there before I updated to the BigSur. It is really annoying to have to send the file/photo to my messages, open my Message app on my computer then download it from there... to the Downloads Folder. I do not even know how to change the default location of my Airdop files, so I didn't do that. Can someone help me know where to look for these disappearing files, please? Thank you!

Did you at one time sync your desktop and documents with iCloud? If that was on and then off, the Mac will build directories of the documents in you home account folder. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206985 I've seen support on that in the forums but I've never experienced it so wouldn't be able to offer the best solution and, truthfully, I'm not sure that is the root cause. There is also a technical way (I've been told) to change the AirDrop directory. Again, never did it myself. I believe the folder will appear

Let's see if anyone else offers a solution. Otherwise, I'd raise that question in a new post in the forums or try get support.apple.com.

I looked around online a bit. Some of the possible solutions involve:

Toggling bluetooth on and off.

Restarting Finder Apple Menu > Force restart

restarting your Mac

From there they get much more technical and time consuming ....

I just dropped a file to my Mac. Do you see the notification pop up on the Mac saying a file is incoming? You might have notifications turned off. Try to catch that notification. you can select "open" or "show in finder" from there.

Maybe the Mac is just not receiving and the restarts or toggles will work.

Otherwise, I'd try chatting with support at get support.apple.com

I have recently been turning my Bluetooth on and off because I've been using my AirPods, so that was not the trick, unfortunately (would've loved if it was that easy!!). I am going to restart my computer now, and see if that changes anything.

I have also briefly glanced at the other options for the destination directory, installing an app, etc. I have a headache just thinking about all of those steps I might have to take!

I do not remember syncing my desktop and my documents to the Cloud. I might have, just don't remember. Yikes. I have recently had a ton of issues with Dropbox... There was an update, and it seems that it automatically decided to start to save all kinds of documents on my computer that I didn't give it access to. That's another problem for another time. I have not yet checked out your solution for the syncing problem.

Thank you, for all of your help, by the way. I'm learning a lot.
