Can't finish downloading software update within 15 mins. How to know my Mac continue downloading it?

I follow the step by step in this article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263

All good until step 4, in which my internet connection could not finish the download within the 15 minutes recovery mode limit period.

I am not sure whether my Mac continues downloading the software update in the background or not, since it closes the Finder window that previously shows the download progress bar.

So, yesterday I finally figured out what happened with the download. After my iPhone exited the recovery mode due to the 15-min limitation, I took note of the remaining software download time, which was 10 mins left. Then, I immediately put my iPhone back into the recovery mode, click cancel when prompted to download software, and I found out my Mac was actually resuming the download even though the finder window only said my it is downloading a software (no progress bar, no percentage, no gigabytes downloaded info which was really frustrating). I knew, because within the 10 mins, my iPhone started installing the software.

So, a possible point of improvement for apple is to improve the UI for this process. It really is frustrating not knowing the progress of a download, especially after you abruptly stopped the process due to a time limitation.

"If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits the recovery mode screen, let the download finish, then repeat step 3."

Hello skeletonwings,

We understand that you have some questions about recovery mode and the download process that's involved.

We also see that you have already followed the steps in this guide: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We want to let you know that the iPhone will only stay in recovery mode for 15 minutes. After that, it will exit it on its own. However, once the download has started, it will continue until it's complete regardless of the current status of the iPhone.

Once the download has completed, you can follow the steps to place it back into recovery mode, and then continue from there.

We hope that helps to clear everything up for you!

Cheers!

The key here is what does "let the download finish" mean. It's not clear the that download is finishing at all. The download seems to be interrupted when the phone resets; the phone disappears and everything. It's very disorienting because it goes from two visual representations of the download (a bar at the bottom and a pie graph next to the phone), to zero. Thats why I agree with skeletonwings, adjusting the UI so its clear the download will continue where it left off would be great. Or even in the text say, "you mac is currently downloading software for the iphone... There will be no download bar but the download will continue" otherwise you waste time on all the other usual 'fixes' like resetting the computer, unplugging and replugging etc which all do actually restart the download and really waste a lot of time. Its especially important when you dont know about the 15 min timeout.
