Recover broken screen MacBook from external display?

Hello,

I have a 2019 MacBook Air with a faulty flex cable so the screen does not work, and I had to connect it to an external monitor to use. Now I want to sell it away and have tried to wipe the disk clean through macOS Recovery (macOS Recovery screen still shows on the external display).

After that instead of reinstalling the OS I shut it down to return later. But once I was back, I couldn’t access the Recovery screen through the monitor anymore though the Mac was still functioning and the ports were still working.

I tried to recover firmware with Configurator 2 to no avail as well.

Without the video output I could not do anything.

I would like to ask what I could do in this case? Thank you very much!

Ben Vietnam,

That's good to know that the hub works when connected to a different Mac. To rule it out being an issue with your MacBook Air, are you able to directly connect it to your Mac, without using the hub? If so, does an image appear then? Let's also reset the System Management Controller (SMC) as that can help with issues with power to the USB port, if that's what's happening. Here's more information on the SMC and how to reset it: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

Keep us posted.

Best regards.

Hello Ben Vietnam,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having a display issue with your Mac, and after restoring it you're no longer able to use an external monitor. Ar you using an adapter to connect the display to your Mac? If so, check out the steps under "Check your cable or adapter" here: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry on your Mac

If those steps don't help, let us know more details:

  • If you're using an adapter, which one are you using specifically?
  • Does the same behavior happen if you use a different display?

The more details you can provide the better.

Take care.
