VO2 Max stopped rcording

I do regular morning runs with apple watch SE and have solid VO2 Max data up to 28 June. Then nothing. I have done a mix of my usual fifteen minute runs and longer runs, both were always recorded previously. The watch has heart data on each run recognising the workout, and this goes to the heart app on the phone (iphone XR). But VO2 Max not updating. Any ideas?

It appears they changed their algorithm for providing VO2 max values.

“With watchOS 7, Apple Watch Series 3 and later use an updated algorithm to estimate a user’s cardio fitness level as measured by VO2 max”

“A view of VO2 max in the Health app in iOS 14 under Cardio Fitness is shown in figure 1. A VO2 max value may be generated after walking, running, or hiking outdoors on relatively flat ground (that is, a grade of less than 5 percent incline or decline) with adequate GPS, heart rate signal quality, and exertion (an approximate increase of 30 percent of the range from resting heart rate to max).”

Support suggested I was no longer getting a reading after getting one consistently on the same route for 2 months because there are hills where I live. I went to a flat track and walked 30 mins with a more consistent heart rate for 4 sessions over the course of 4 days. I still haven’t got a VO2 max reading, even after following support’s suggestions. There could be a bug in the new algorithm for certain users. I hope it works out for you.
