Factory Resetting old Iphone 5 with Itunes

My old iphone 5 is disabled from too many incorrect password login attempts. I am trying to reset it to factory so my daughter can use it. I am able to power it off and then hold the home button while plugging in the charger cord from the computer. The apple logo comes up then the itunes. But the itunes on my windows computer is not showing it recognizes any device and its not popping up with the typical message window it should be, its just sitting there, no changes. Can anyone help me with this?

Incorrect Process:

Erase All Content and Settings and use a new Passcode after the erase won't work because it will ask you for the old passcode. You have only one option read below

Correct Process

If one had attempted unlocking multiple times with incorrect Lock Screen passcode, or if a message says that the device is disabled, learn what one needs, what one gets, and what is lost.

You need a computer to follow these steps. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend.
