factory reset/restore

I can't reset my iphone to factory on my son's phone. He has forgotten the password. I have the latest version of itunes downloaded. Itunes keeps telling me something is wrong with my iphone and it needs to be updated or restored. When I choose to restore or to update it won't do either. What do I do now?
