reinstall of OS Catalina on a 2013 imac after erasing the hard drive - all in preparation for a trade in for a new imc

I have tried to reinstall the OS many times, but the internet is needed, and I can't see how I can set up my network with a blank hard drive?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Try connecting the iMac to your Router with a Ethernet cable and then follow the directions at > https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

Thank you for that information. The wi fi icon was blanked out so I could not access it. However, I followed the recommendation of ‘den.thed’ and wired an Ethernet cable between iMac and router. I then went through the normal reinstall process and lo and behold, it is now downloading Catalina beautifully!! Thank you for your help. And - why didn’t I think of that!
