Low audio on iPad Pro when using Skype, Zoom & Messenger

I have 2021 iPad Pro 11"

When I start up Zoom there is no audio, and volume buttons don't work.

I saw the same issue come up in the spring of 2020 saying it was resolved, but no comment what the fix was.

Hello auren,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you hear low audio or no audio when using a couple of third-party apps, and we'd like to help.

For this issue, we suggest checking your sound settings and cleaning the speakers. You might also try making a FaceTime call to see if the issue is reproduced in an Apple app. This Apple Support article explains these steps in more detail:

If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker

Also, consider whether you have headphones connected when this happens. If so, test the sound without the headphones, and with a different pair of headphones. These steps help further isolate the issue to the app, headphones, or iPad.

However, if you discover that the issue only happens in the third-party app, we suggest getting in touch with the app developer directly. They might be able to be reached here:

How to contact an app developer

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Also, if I use bluetooth connection, such as with my AirPods the problem goes away... almost. I have an app that gives audio feedback. With just the speakers, there is almost no audio at all. With the AirPods, the audio comes on but I have to turn them up almost all the way. But when someone else in the conversation starts talking, the audio is WAY louder and really bothersome.

auren,

Thanks for following up with those additional details.

Next, try removing any protective films or cases that might block the volume buttons. If you haven't already, we also suggest checking for debris or dirt around the buttons. This article explains these steps in greater detail:

If a button or switch isn't working on your iPhone or iPad

Also, head into Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual, then slide the audio volume balance slider all the way to the right. Do the same thing by moving the slider all the way to the left. Do you hear sound as expected?

If not, we recommend getting the iPad into the hands of a service center. We strongly recommend booking an appointment since walk-ins might not be accepted, and you might be able to find locations and book an appointment online here:

Find Locations

If you're in a supported region, you might also be able to view and book appointments using the Apple Support app:

App Store Preview

Before heading in, here's how to prepare for your visit:

Get your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch ready for service

Have a great day.
