I am trying to access my iPhoto from Time Machine backup -2012. I get an error message saying" iPhoto isn't supported on MacOS"...... I am not sure how I can access and save these old photos. Thank you apple community for your suggestions.
iPhoto won't work on anything newer than Catalina. You need to use Photos its replacement. Launch Photos with the option key held down and from the dialog choose your iPhoto Library.

An iPhoto version older than 9.6.1 is not supported on macOS 10.0 or later, and 9.6.1 is unsupported after Mojave 10.14.6.
Go to your home folder in the backup, then Pictures, and restore the library.
