Print mail attachments as icon only

Hey all!

I'm trying to print emails with pdf attachments and when doing so, it always prints the full pdf rather than displaying it as an icon attachment. I've tried right clicking and selecting "View as icon" but while it presents it as an icon within the email, it still displays the entire pdf when printing. I've also run this command in terminal then restarted mail and then the entire computer to no results:

defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes

When running this command and returning to Mail, neither the email window nor the printing window displays the pdf as an icon. I'm using a work email account, so do I need to change "com.apple.mail" to something else?

If anyone out there is willing to help, it is much appreciated, as other threads I've read through weren't able to solve the problem. I am currently on Catalina, but my office will be switching over to Big Sur today

Thanks!

Thanks for reaching back out to us per190,

While there doesn't appear to be a specific Terminal command available, we may have some other options for you.

The other option you might have would be to create a screenshot. Click here for how to make a screenshot on Mac, including how to only take a screenshot of a portion of the screen: Take a screenshot on your Mac - Apple Support

To make sure the entire email fits in one screenshot, you may need to use Command + or Command - buttons together to zoom the email preview to be larger or smaller.

Once you've created the screenshot, you can print that out.

You can also submit feedback to Apple to ask for more options for Mail here: Product Feedback - Apple

Have a great day!

Hi there per190,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We understand you're wanting to print out your emails with only the icons showing of the attachments.

Try highlighting one of the messages in the Mail app and then clicking "File" in the menu bar. Once there, click on "Export as PDF...". That should save a PDF version of the message you see, without expanding the attachment icon. Once the PDF version is printed, it should only display the icon and not the entire attachment as well.

Here is a bit more information on printing through Preview: Print PDFs and images in Preview on Mac - Apple Support

We hope you have an awesome day!

Take care!

Unfortunately the same result occurs. Even exported as pdf, any attachments are not viewed as icons, even with "view as icon" selected.

I am now on Big Sur and the command I plugged into the terminal is also not working on this version of MacOS. Perhaps a tick box for "show all attachments as icons" could be added in a future update for mail?
