Regarding macOS Software upgradation

Hi everyone! I am currently using macOS Catalina on my MacBook Air (Retina, 2020) model. I have currently 200 GB of available storage on this device. I want to upgrade it to macOS Big Sur, so do I need a time machine backup before upgradation or can I directly upgrade it ?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Do you have a Rescue Plan In-Place. This comprises having 3 Backups using 2 methods and 1 Off Site incase of Theft, Loss or Natural Disasters. A Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS. For addition purposes - two Clones each to separate external drives. This is insurance incase things goes sideways. At least one Clone and / or Time Machine Backup should be Off - Site

Backups are how to indicate that the data involved has value.

No backups means that the data is expendable, or can be regenerated, or recovered from other sources.

An upgrade can corrupt data, and an upgrade can cause critical apps to malfunction, and data can also be lost due to hardware loss, theft, damage, fire, or flood.

Attempting to recover from unprotected-data loss pr corruption is more effort, more disruption, and more expense.
