I have iMessage set up on my Mac and iPhone. If I read a message on my phone it still shows up as unread on my Mac and I have to go through and read each message on my Mac again. How can I get the two to sync up?

I've done all of these suggested things several times and it doesn't help. This problem popped up after years of everything working smoothly, new phones, iPads, updates, etc.
Try Settings/Your Name/iCloud and slide off Messages syncing. Wait a few minutes and then slide syncing on. Allow time for syncing to occur.
Last resort - have you tried signing out of iCloud, restarting the device, and then signing back in?
