Raise to wake off but screen still turns on

I just upgraded from iPhone 8 to 12 pro max and restored my phone from the settings I had on my previous phone. I have raise to wake turned off but almost every time I grab my phone the screen turns on. It is starting to kill my battery fast everyday. I have restarted the phone and turned raise to wake on and off but still continues.

The Raise to Wake feature only has a slight effect on battery life. It is not going affect battery life significantly whether it is OFF or ON. Just wanted to state the above so you know.

Back to your concern of turning Raise to Wake OFF. You have stated that Raise to Wake is set to OFF however almost every time you grab your iPhone the screen turns ON. There is another feature on your iPhone that is possibly set to ON. That feature is Tap to Wake. When you grab your iPhone, then you may be inadvertently touching your screen and setting it ON. To turn Tap to Wake feature OFF, open Settings ➔ Accessibility ➔ Touch ➔ Tap To Wake: Set this to OFF. See if this helps the matter.
