im trying to talk to friends on discord but when i try and grant permission it doesnt show up in security and privacy settings, ive tried reseting the permissions in the terminal, ive reinstalled mac os twice but no luck im running big sur on a 2018 imac i just bought

Thank you for getting back to us. We understand that you are not using the built in microphone and the steps that were given will allow you to connect a device to use as a microphone or speaker. Since the microphone access permission is coming from an app and you don't see it listed in the privacy pane, and you've tried to change it in terminal and you've reinstalled your Mac OS twice then the next step should be support directly from Apple. im not trying to use an external input but thank you, the permissions for using a microphone does not show up when prompted

Thank you for posting in Apple Support communities. We understand that you are wanting to use an external microphone with your Mac and have been unable to allow permissions. We would love to provide you support on this.
To get an audio device connected and used you would look at the audio settings not the privacy settings. Follow these steps below to connect an audio device:
-Open system preferences
-Click on sound
-Click the input and output tabs at the top and select the audio device you have. connected.
