non working phone after Facetime

I finished a Facetime call with a friend in the USA and a small black square remained after the call in the top right of my screen. Nothing on my phone (iphone XR) will now work. I can't turn it off, apps press but don't function and I can't get rid of the black square which is now the same size as my screen!

Has anyone experienced this and how do I get rid of the black screen?

Thanks

iPhone XR, iOS 14

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME UP
  • Press and quickly release VOLUME DOWN
  • Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears (15-30 seconds)

The operative word here is QUICKLY

This is a hardware recognized process if done correctly; if it doesn’t work your phone is broken; use the Get Support link at the top of this page to discuss repair options.
