Audio messages are not playing through Bluetooth headphones

When attempting to play audio-iMessages through my Bluetooth headphones, the first message will play through the headphones, but then all additional messages will play through the phone speaker. In order to play the next message through the headphones, I have to disconnect them and then reconnect. I am using an iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 14.6) with Hesh 3 headphones, but my friend with an iPhone 12 Max and Bose headphones has the same issue.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities  Jjisaac0618,

Thank you for contacting us regarding audio messages. You have come to the right place and we are happy to assist you.  If we understand correctly, you are trying to listen to messages received while wearing bluetooth speakers, but only the first one plays.   We can understand why you’d reach out for a solution. To start, make sure your iPhone is up to date using the steps here:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Restart your iPhone and headphones after that:

Restart your iPhone

Then test again. If the issue continues, let us know if you're having issues with any other audio between your iPhone and headphones and we'll go from there.

Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.

Best regards.

Hi,

I’m SO glad someone asked about this!! I’ve been having the exact same problem for weeks and it’s so frustrating.

After playing the first message as normal in my headphones, it will auto play the next message using the iPhone speaker. So awkward in public! I have to reconnect my Bluetooth device between playing each and every voice text message.

I have tried on 3 different brands of Bluetooth headphones and have had the same issue each time. I have friends with this issue as well. I’ve been using voice texts with iPhone for years and years and have only begun having this problem in the past several weeks. Please keep me updated if Apple comes up with a fix to this bug!

Unfortunately, this remains unresolved. I ended up speaking to Apple support and I was informed this issue had not yet been reported, so they needed a lot of information, including screen capture of the issue occurring; the problem with that was twofold:

  1. The only way to reproduce the problem was by having someone send me new audio messages (played messages will not auto-play the next message), so it required me and a friend to both be available and none of this could be done while I was on the phone with Apple support (I only have 1 phone).
  2. Once I finally had audio messages, attempting to screen record the issue resulted in the audio playing back as expected, so I was never able to produce a video demonstrating the issue.

I did verify that the issue still occurred when not being recorded, so the only way I can think of to capture the issue would be with another camera, another available person with an iPhone, time to capture the data, and then re-attempt to contact Apple. As a bonus, Apple was supposed to call me at a scheduled day/time, but failed to call until the following day when I was at work and left no way to get back in touch with the rep directly, so I decided it wasn't worth my continued efforts.

I haven’t. The tricks I’ve used is just letting all messages play through with the volume turned all the way down then reconnecting and playing them one by one. Or playing one at a time and then going to my voicemail and selecting my Bluetooth as the audio device and going back. Both options are horrible. I have an iPhone X too and will be upgrading this year I’m wondering if this might be an issue with just old models?

DId you ever solve this issue? Drives me crazy. I have tried multiple non apple bluetooth headsets. Mainly LG. At work we send voice texts all the time. super annoying to have to disconnect and reconnect every time. It has been an ongoing issue for a long time. I was about to upgrade my iphone X because I thought it was my model or phone specific, but glad I didn't seems like an apple issue across the board.
