Tunnel Sound With AirPods

I received my AirPods Pro at the weekend, my first in ear speakers, and have been experiment to find the correct fit for my ears, and I’m not to sure whether I’m there or not. At the moment it seems to be one medium and one large.

The fit guide might indicate a good fit but if I’m answering a call or talking to myself it sounds as though my voice is going down some kind of tunnel. Is this natural? I appreciate you are putting a foreign body into your ears and sounds might sound different (the tunnel has showed me though that my singing voice is like the mating call of a rusty file !)

Any idea What might be causing this, or is it power for the course?

For those of you who’ve found the supplied tips are really not doing the job have you tried generic tips ?

Thanks for any advice you can offer

Thanks for the interest

Ok I started by making sure I had a good seal as per the Ear Tip Fit Test.

I’ve been listening to a few music videos on YouTube and the sound is pretty clear.  On a number of music videos I’ve listened to you can definitely pick out the base. With cd’s I have on the phone I can quite easily ski back and forward. So no issue there

As regards voice memos, yes I can detect that echo, tunnel type sound, perhaps not that pronounced but it is there.

Where it does leap out is with telephone calls.  While making calls the issue was quite obvious. On Noise Cancelation there was no difficulty picking up the tunnel sound, it wasn’t quite as bad on Transparency but still there. The big one was when I hoped over to Off, it was very pronounced, had to switch immediately.

So what do you think, faulty mike?  Time to return or are there any fixes?

kah22,

Based on what you've told us, it would be the microphone if the issue is related to the AirPods. That said, go ahead and test for the issue while on a FaceTime call. This will ensure that it's not a carrier-related issue. If the issue doesn't continue on FaceTime or another internet-based call, the issue is not the AirPods.

Let us know what you find.

Hello kah22,

Based on what you posted, it sounds like the issue may be with your microphone. When you listen to music or videos, does the issue continue? If not, the speakers and fit wouldn't be the issue.

Does the issue happen if you record yourself with Voice Memos and play it back? Does this happen on phone calls?

Additionally, have you adjusted Noise Control and Transparency settings, as discussed here:

AirPods Pro and AirPods Max Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode

Thanks!
