After downloading some music on my 8 plus phone, i went to play a song no sound and it came up with …operation could not be completed an unknown error occurred (-12172)
what is this and how can it be rectified!

That may be an indication that the downloaded song file got corrupted somehow. Delete it from your iPhone and then redownload it.
