MacBook / external monitor will not sleep when in clamshell

This hasn't been a problem until recently:

I have a MacBook Pro running 11.5 Big Sur. I also have an external Acer monitor. If I connect the two and have my MacBook open I can put the MacBook to Sleep and the monitor also sleeps/turns off/goes blank.

But, if my MacBook is closed (clamshell) when I click Sleep the monitor goes blank for a second and then turns back on. I can't get my MacBook to sleep.

I've tried turning both the MBP and monitor off and turning on the MBP first. I've also tried turning on the monitor first. I've changed the System Preferences, Displays, Arrangements and changed the position of the Menu Bar. But nothing is working.

Hi Sparky Marky,

Thanks for taking the time to post your question to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're experiencing issues with your MacBook Pro going to sleep as expected when your external monitor is connected.

First, we'd recommend starting with the details here: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep

If you continue to experience issues, please reset the SMC and test again.

How to reset the SMC of your Mac

We look forward to hearing the results.

Regards.
