Macbook Pro M1 wont wake in clamshell mode

Hi there, as I have asked recently I have a problem where my macbook pro M1 14" wont wake in clamshell mode. I have a monitor conected via HDMI plus apple keyboard, trackpad and mouse. When the mac sleeps or is restarted I have to press any key on my keyboard like 20 times before it wakes to ask for my password. This is super frustrating and I know others have this issue. My last question was deemed 'solved' for some reason but it isn't. I am all up to date with my OS installs praying for a bug fix.

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 12.6

Hello, man.

My problem was the same.

It was solved when I used the power supply in a thunderbolt port. Both the original apple power supply and other supply (Baseus 100W) connected via the thunderbolt port work. However, when I use magsafe, clamshell mode stops working.

I hope it helps you!

Ok. I found the issue. If you use a keyboard / mouse (in my case logitech) that isn't a USB-C and requires you to use an USB/USB-C adaptor, the system will not always see it when it's asleep. I purchased, against my wishes, an Apple Magic Mouse and Keyboard and now the system wakes up with a simple click on the mouse.

Apple (Tier 2) says there is a tech note regarding this. SO, that means all of the OS's up to ventura had the code for the older USB's but with ventura not so much.

I have the same problem, and it does not have to do with monitor wakeup time. It worked properly in Monterey, the monitor would wake up in a few seconds. In Ventura it doesn't work at all. I have to take the Mac out of it's stand on the shelf, open it and press the fingerprint reader (2019 MBP 16), then I can close it and put it on the shelf. It will wake up after brief sleep, but not after it has been sleeping for a prolonged time.

This is not long term viable and I would consider this a massive bug in Ventura. A solution is needed ASAP.

Hi thanks for your reply but this is not my issue. Clamshell made is when the laptop is closed, but with a screen connected to the Hdmi port and external mouse and keyboard connected, the machine should function normally. This means when it is restarted... login request will be displayed and away you go. However like I stated, the external screen remains off and completely black when the computer restarts... It is asleep. It has to be woken by pressing any key on the keyboard multiple times until the display wakes. The power button is unavailable as the machine is closed. This is not how clamshell mode is supposed to work. When the machine is restarted it should display the login page after reboot. This issue has been described by multiple users in other threads but seems to be being ignored by apple.

Apple silicon
1. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds, until you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options. Select Options, then click Continue.
2. If you never see the startup options window, release the power button, then repeat step 1.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.

To add: I've removed the Macbook from the dock, plugged the keyboard / mouse wireless USB dongle and HDMI for the monitor directly into the Macbook and it still will not wake up. (The dock is not the problem)

I swapped mouse and keyboards to a different type and that doesn't help. At this point, I can only use my Macbook pro in laptop mode. Do I need to take it to a Apple store or return it?... This thing cost me >$3k

All I can say is that time is a factor when waking the machine in clamshell mode. Like if I tap a key once.. Nothing. Ā few times... The monitor I'm using seems to wake but then go back to sleep. I've literally got to press keys or move my mouse constantly for quite a while for the machine to actually wake to the sign in screen. Apple don't care. If they did they would have fixed this issue by now. Its been known about for ages

Yeah that's interesting, but doesn't explain my issue. I have new magic devices (track pad and keyboard) and still have the same behavior weather they are plugged in or not. When I restart my machine 8n clamshell mode it restarts to sleep mode. Ahh what? Why should that be? It should just restart to the login screen like my last mac, or how my current macbook in question does when it's not in clamshell mode. From there it doesn't matter what I try it always is the same... Need to make multiple inputs during a time period of around 10 seconds continuously to wake the **** thing to the login page.
