wireless Scanner connection

Since upgrading to macOS Big Sur, I am unable to use my scanner. The Epson scanner/printer tells me it is connected and the printer works OK. I am told that I do not have permission to open the app "Epson Scanner", and have done this as suggested. When I try to scan I am also told "fails to open connection to device (-21345)

Hi

I had this exact problem and did the following:

  1. Firstly I connected the printer to my wifi and made sure my imac was on the same network
  2. I then setup the printer over wifi on my imac (it used AirPrint)
  3. Then navigate to Finder -> Go( in the menu at the top) -> Macintosh HD -> Library -> Image Capture -> Devices
  4. Copy "Epson Scanner" to your Desktop and alter the permissions for everyone and staff to "Read & Write", to alter permissions right click on "Epson Scanner" and go to get info and permissions are at the bottom
  5. Delete the Original "Epson Scanner" Plugin from Devices Folder
  6. Copy the "Epson Scanner" from the desktop with custom permission to Devices Folder
  7. Try opening the scanner now, may need a restart

If you want to go back to a wired connection to the printer like I did then just setup the printer with a wired connection you do not need to do all the above again, you can even go back to Finder -> Go -> Macintosh HD -> Library -> Image Capture -> Devices and change the "Epson Scanner" everyone permission back to read only.

By the way this assumes you have all of the relevant drivers installed.

Hopefully this helps

It is difficult for us to help you when you do not provide the full model number of your Epson device.

I suspect that the application Epson Scanner is outdated, and for some models, Epson has introduced Epson Scanner 2 this year as an update. Also, your device might even be supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint that works with selected networked devices without the need to use any vendor drivers or utilities.

Thanks everyone very much - I had tried most of those options - upgrading software, seeking permissions through Finder/get info without success. I finally had a lengthy phone session with a patient fellow from Apple Support, who repeated all of the above and then essentially deleted then reinstalled the printer/scanner.

all good now thanks

The above solutions did not work for me. What worked is to find the application as described above ( Macintosh HD -> Library -> Image Capture -> Devices ) then double click to open it. When I did so the OS gave me a warning the application had been downloaded and did I trust it. I approved it. Then, everything worked normal.

So, I suspect it was just a Big Sur security issue not wanting to launch the app. Once approved it worked.

Notes:

  • I had changed the permissions previously and it did not work, BUT I had not changed them back before doing what I described above. So, it is possible both are necessary.
  • I had also downloaded and installed updated Drivers from the Epson website in an attempt to get it to work, none of which changed it immediately, but had been done prior to my trying the direct double-click launch method.
