Brother scanner doesn't work after Ventura upgrade

I have a 2017 Macbook Pro 13-inch, serial # FV***V22. I recently upgraded to Ventura 13.0.1 and now my scanner won't work. Previously I would got to System Settings, click Printers & Scanners, and click the Open Scanner button. Since the software upgrade, when I click the Open Scanner button, a new page opens with the name of my printer at the top (Brother MFC-J870DW) but nothing happens after that. I was able to use the scanner with an app (Brother iPrint&Scan) but regret the loss of innate scanner ability

Just went through this and had to

1) Delete the printer from my iMac (Ventura 13.1)

2) Download and update the driver from Brother

3) Download and run the firmware update tool from Brother

4) Restart my iMac

Now the scanner is working and with full features.

I am sorry you are having scanner problems. If you will bear with me, I will offer some things to consider which may be useful. Whenever we install an operating system upgrade or some OS updates, printers and scanners will often stop working. Then a new OS compliant software must be installed for the scanner to work. Experience has shown that many printer/scanner manufacturers are very slow to provide updated software. What you can do is to thoroughly check theBrother web site for updated compliant software that works. If none is available, then you should ask when it will be released. If that doesn't work, you can try scanning using Apple's Image Capture app. It will scan, but is not full featured. Another alternative is to download and try the full featured scanner software from VueScan. You can try it for free. It will show a watermark until you purchase it. I bought it and can recommend it. I have no association with VueScan. Good luck.

You say that you downloaded the latest driver. My question is:

  • Is that driver specifically listed as being for your specific printer?
  • Does that driver say it works with your specific version of your computer's operating system?

If the answer is yes then I recommend that you contactBrother's support site for assistance. As noted above there are alternatives available to make your scanner function. VueScan will work with any fairly recent scanner.

Aha. Shared devices looks grayed out. But... if you hover over it and click, devices magically appear. I got a scan. I had to discover that you can set dpi if you click "Show Details". It should also say "Set". Thanks. (I did already get the current job done with my HP Printer when I discovered it was a Brother only bug.). Hopefully, Brother comes out with a new driver soon. I can now wait.

The official response from Brother:

With that said, you may be able to use the Image Capture app instead of the Open Scanner in Settings. That is the first thing I would try. If the standard ICA driver that is provided with the OS is unable to detect your scanner in Image Capture, then you will need an ICA driver from brother. Since they choose not to support Ventura, you may be able to find it in a different model from Brother. They say it is included with the Printer Drivers that you can download, but don't know if they give you the option to just install the ICA driver without the printer drivers.

I had the same issue. I updated to the latest driver, but no improvement. Brother is not going to update my model support.

The work around I found is to create a new printer, that is "Control panels-> Printers and Scanners-> Add printer, Scanner or Fax". For me (a brother MPC8680DN) it comes up in the list. Select it and give it a new name, perhaps with a number at the end. Like Upstairs Brother 2023-1. It works for 3-7 scans, then you have to create another printer with a new name. Don't worry the control panel will let you delete the old ones.

My guess is there is some form of access restriction, maybe with removing or rewriting a file. Hoses the system, but gets recreated with a new printer activation (new folder I am sure).

Hope that helps someone.

Just got off chat with Brother and they don't have any intentions of updating their drivers and apps and, therefore, will not be supporting Ventura. I have a MFC-9970CDW with the same issues. I can print but just tried to scan to send tax stuff to my accountant and found out I can't scan. Bottom line is they want you to buy a new printer!
