How do I know if an email from Apple is fake?

See Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support for some advice. Context usually helps, e.g. you might expect to get a receipt after a purchase. If you get emailed about a purchase you don't recognize don't use links in that message, use the account page in iTunes or the https://reportaproblem.apple.com/ pages instead.
