iCloud photos not syncing on Mac

I have about 23,000 photos/videos on my iphone which is backed up through iCloud. When I try to access the photos on my Mac, it seems it has stopped syncing. It is now July, and it seems the last photos there are from March. When I go to iCloud.com they are all there, up-to-date. Only in the photos the sync seems to have stopped. It has been stuck on “updating…” for days but nothing has changed.

Some things I have tried so far:

  • logging out of iCloud on Mac and logging back in
  • restarting Mac
  • buying more iCloud storage space (I now have 2TB)
  • updating my Mac OS. I now have Big Sur 11.5.1

No success. Please help!
