Override Auto-Focus

Is there a way to override auto-focus? When shooting photos of close-up items, auto-focus gets the background rather than the actual *closer* item of my interest. I can pull back a bit, let auto-focus lock in on the item, and then I lean it a little more. Most of the time it holds (seems to be light dependent) but the other times it breaks lock and focuses on something further behind it. Tapping and holding for the lock often fails. Is there something else I can try?

The cameras on iPhone are not really macro. So, if you're trying to get super closer to a subject than the camera was designed to focus clearly on, you'll get the result you're describing. A better solution is to go close enough to the subject to be in clear focus, then in post photo edit, zoom in on the subject.

You can tap on the item in the photo you want to be in focus, as long as it is within the focus range supported by the camera.
