How do I move iCloud files onto external hard drive without first having to move them to my macbook pro hard drive?

I haven't done this lately but suspect it will still work. Use an internet browser (e.g., Safari) and set the browser download location to the external drive and then log into www.icloud.com and go to iCloud Drive there. Select the file and click the download icon in the bar at the top of the window.
