Apple TV+ content has poor quality, freezes, buffers all the time

After spotty performance of Apple TV+ content through our TCL TV's Roku Apple TV app, we decided to try a new Apple TV 4K. The problems are still there -- episodes of Ted Lasso and Schmigadoon both struggled through, frequently bumping down to lower resolutions, skipping around, and freezing. The Apple TV is connected via ethernet to a fast connection, and no other channels ever have any trouble streaming 4K content. Is there a throttling problem with Spectrum, or possibly degraded Apple services (the status page says everything's fine)? We're on the brink of returning the device and cancelling our subscription.

Thank you! The solution from akinwande225 did absolutely work. Toggle the setting for “Limit Playback to SD” to ON. All freezing, skipping, jumping, (and out-of-synch subtitles/captions) are gone with no noticeable picture quality loss. Everything plays as it should. Content was previously unwatchable, especially foreign language tv and films where captions appeared too late or were skipped completely. I’ll still probably cancel after the trial period but this will get me through the three months.

I also have an Apple TV 4K 2021 and Airport Extreme... and - suddenly, within the last couple weeks - Apple TV+ content has been unwatchable. (Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and YouTube TV are all stellar.) Spent 3+ hours on the phone with Support. Submitted analytics files. Case is still open. (One Apple TV is ethernet-connected, the other is wireless. Both experience low-res, buffering, freezes.) We're in our 2nd year of Apple TV+, and missing some great content.

I was thinking to myself, maybe the app would perform better on an actual Apple TV device, but this thread has refuted that….so thank you!

I have the problem on my ps5 and on my Roku ultra

i don’t have an AirPort Extreme router, I have a Unifi dream machine…like many of you I updated my router to its latest firmware and rebooted it…worked ok temporarily…can take up to one minute just to bring up the main content screen, can take another minute to start a show, sometimes it doesn’t. Right now I’m watching episode 1 of morning show (which is great content btw) and it’s working, but we actually couldn’t fast forward through credits, it let us try, spun its circle for 30 seconds and then resumed at the beginning of the credits. Every other streaming app I have runs flawlessly on my roku and PS5. Hoping there is a fix soon. I would guess it’s potentially a peering issue with internet providers (I have comcast), or a regional issue with content location (I’m in Mountain West), or I have to manually do something to my router (I don’t have to do that with any other provider).

hope Apple figures it out soon, we shouldn’t have to jump through this many hoops just to stream…it’s mostly effortless with other providers….maybe they haven’t worked out all the kinks of content streaming across multiple regions? (Wild guess)…

I am chiming in with the same problem, which shows up as stuttering and pausing ONLY in Apple TV+ programs. We are streaming through Firefox browser on a Windows 10 laptop, which is connected to our non-smart TV by HDMI cable. We have no difficulties with other streaming services (most of which allow us to adjust the resolution of the stream). We'd like to be able to watch The Morning Show and Ted Lasso, but the interruptions are very frustrating.

I too only have issues with the Apple TV+ app and what I experience does not happen with any other streaming apps I have. I often loose audio and it seems to happen most when I launch the app. It also happens when I use the skip intro function after I’ve just watched a program with audio. Something new that started yesterday is the program ratings seen in the top left of the screen when a program first starts now remains on for the entire program.
