MacBook Pro M1 cracked screen

I have not dropped my computer or have had exercised pressure on it. I left it opened and came back to see a small crack on the side of the screen. The screen is not working anymore.

Apparently other users have experience the same thing.

I bought my computer about 5months a go.

Has Apple acknowledged hog this as a manufacturing issue yet ? Will I get a full refund for this

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.4

Hi, yes. It’s is very frustrating. It took me several tries with going into the Apple Store (where the lady wrote in her notes that I dropped the computer), then online support and after I brought up the class action lawsuit, the online support connected me to a really nice guy who was a “higher up” manager and he spent time asking me all sorts of questions that he said the engineering team was curious about because this has been happening so often. Then they overnighted my computer and it was back almost the next day. They fixed my screen and did not charge me- but they said if it happened again they would have to

charge me (???) so now I’m so ultra scared even when I open and close it and when I put it in a bag. A laptop should be a lot sturdier than this- especially for what we pay for the apple product.

Unfortunately Apple is not yet recognizing this as a manufacturing defect. There is a class action suit going only about maybe 5K people have experienced it out of maybe 7 million manufactured. Apple will fix it for $300 if you have AppleCare+. If you got something like Allstate Insurance they will simply pay.

I do believe the screen is too thin. The M1Pro screen is about 3/16 of an inch thick.

I did have to keep making calls in order to find someone who would Actually listen..Eventually I found a lovely person at Apple Tech. who must have experienced this with others ...They were very sympathetic but more importantly..totally Understood and believed what I was saying...It was repaired at no expense to me.....I was scared to open it for the first week TBH...but I do use it now the same care I applied before...Its back on the desk and that's where it stays......After investigating the fault with the help of Mr Google...I realised very quickly ..I Was NOT the ONLY one.....It does however, make you keep questioning, everything you did prior to the screen developing an instantaneous fault....All I did was walk away to make a coffee...came back and BOOM!...WTF is that ?!!.... I was mortified ..It was a gift to myself and was only 7 and a bit months old...

Had the exact same problem as at least one friend of mine also had, all after 6 to 8 months of acquiring it.

I do not advise to buy the new m1 since apple is not even acknowledging the problem, which means it's not covered by the guarantee (they will say it's because of bad usage) and the repair will cost you up to more than half the price of what you previously paid (+700€). Not frustrating enough, apple support said they haven't heard of this when there's clearly a thread on the oficial website and it's something getting around from several other tech entities.

I had an apple hard case on mine..Went to the kitchen to make a drink..came back and screen was black with a small blaze of colour that looked like a crack on right of screen...It hadn't moved for weeks and was opened up in the morning and closed at night....it was 6 months old and sat permanently on a small desk. ....Apple honoured the repair and it was returned to me. Since then..It is back on the desk, but without the protective top and bottom case, just in case this is the issue....It is a huge problem and I really hope they get to the bottom of it.

I had to make a few calls within the U.K. and impress on Apple Tech that the Cracking Screen had NOT in any way resulted from anything I had done… I went to make a drink in my home came back to my desk and Boom! There it was .. something that appeared to look like a crack ! Unbelievable!! They were very efficient.. It was sent away for repair and returned several days later.. However, common sense tells me, it has to be a design fault given the hundreds of people worldwide, who appear to be having the same issues with all nearly new MacBook Pro M1 …

There's multiple threads on this topic but same thing happened to mine. Just spoke with a senior advisor and they didn't give me any other options than to pay $900+ cad to replace it. It's sad because I've told so many people how amazing this laptop is but now I'm forced to warn everyone to think twice about getting the new Apple laptops because of this issue and Apple refusing to acknowledge and fix it even though there's a lawsuit and a plethora of people being affected. I'm in touch with a few tech reviewers too to let them know of this growing issue. Hopefully Apple will do something instead of pushing for replacements and releasing new laptops with issues.

Yes I got mine fixed coz I had to and no Apple support wasn’t helpful. After 5 days of highlight the issue and speaking with 3 senior advisors the last being someone called Ruben, he said the technical report had indicated several crack was from a single source of impact although I swear it started with just one hairline crack. The senior advisor then asked me and this was after 5 days bear in mind if I had taken any pictures prior to sending it to the repair store because that is the only way he can escalate the issue higher. Of course I didn’t because I started contacting Apple the day I encountered this problem but no one had informed me I had to take a picture of the problem. It was the most infuriating experience of my life. 9 months of a RM6k machine plus a warranty extension that’s useless - even tho I got it fixed because I needed it for exams I no longer think Apple laptops are worth the money invested especially the newer models.

Well, when I went into the apple store the woman told me that I broke it. I kept telling her that I didn’t do anything g out of the ordinary. Just opening and closing the screen. She wrote in her notes that I dropped it and she said it would

cost me $450 and that I should have gotten apple care. After storming out (I was so mad- as my computer is only 6 months old), I went through Apple online support and then had to have a manager call me to finally give me the ok to have the computer sent in for repair- he had me sign something that said if they found damage that I could have caused, they would have to charge me but that probably they would just repair it for me for free under the warranty but that next time I would have to pay.

so I have my computer back with the new screen. Fingers crossed it doesn’t break again.

Mine was less than 6 months old .. went to make a Cuppa .. came back … Boom! .. After many conversations Apple U.K. repaired free of charge. .. But being accused of damaging it myself by the little upstart in the Apple Shop was not a good start to the proceedings.. However, after doing my homework and investigating the same problem on the other side of the Pond. It soon became very clear to all, that this wasn’t a one off.

What is NOT covered under warranty is screen glass breakage, liquid spills, or catastrophic failure (hard drops or "run over by a truck"). Apple has already responded to this dilemma.

Apple has extended what is covered under AppleCare PLUS plans:

These items are now covered on new plans for up to three years (now extendable) by AppleCare PLUS (two incidents of each type with a co-pay that essentially covers the labor). if you want the extended coverage, you must sign up within 60 days and an inspection or remote diagnostic may be required.

————

If you made the decision to NOT pay for the AppleCare PLUS extended warranty, you made a decision to bear the cost of repairs during the extended warranty period yourself.

30 years of using apple laptops as my standard computers, including last version of Air. Have encountered problems with poor hinges and keypad impressions on screens previously, but nothinh I couldn't live with for the convenience of the machine.

Got a new Air 5 months ago. Yesterday, I closed the laptop and put it in my padded backpack as usual for storage. When re-opened it had lines all across the bottom and side. On inspection, three linear cracks from the lower left of the screen. It wasn't dropped and there was nothing obvious to cause the cracks: there is no obvious impact damage on the screen. Genius tells me that I must have closed it on "something" despite my protestations to the contrary: ain't great being called a liar. Over £400 to get a new display, which I need as my Uni teaching starts next week and everythig is on this machine.

Incredibly disappointed with the quality of this hardware. Probably time to move on to other technology if Apple isn't willing to replace obviously faulty goods and help loyal customers. And time to see whether Trading Standards have any teeth.

Apple has NOT taken a step forward on this defective, thin, crack-prone glass we're all stuck with on our M1MBA's. Even with AppleCare+, you're out about $275 for policy and another $99 for screen repair, meaning Apple still collects about $375 from loyal consumers for what amounts to a defect in the product.

At the VERY LEAST, Apple should acknowledge there may be an issue and extend the $99 repair to all early adopters of the M1MBA, simply to maintain goodwill.

Its not handling this well at all and I suspect this posting will grow tremendously as more folk add on to it.
