YouTube Links Open Browser Instead of App

I just updated to iOS 14.7.1 and prior to that I could open YouTube links in the Messages app using the YouTube app. However now it defaults to Safari and I can’t seem to find a way to change that. It’s very frustrating, especially with the limited “Default App” capabilities of an iPhone.

Hello,

Thank you for responding! To answer your questions, yes the videos are being sent from the app and always have been. I was able to open them prior to updating to 14.7.1 so I’m not sure if that actually had anything to do with it, but I didn’t have any issues prior to that and was completely able to open any link to a YouTube video in the app.

Hi ThatThreeGuy,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We are happy to help with the issue you are having with not being able to open YouTube links in messages in the YouTube app. Do you know if the link being sent to you is coming from a link that was opened originally in a browser, or the app? What about in the past? Were you able to open any YouTube link in the YouTube app?

You might want to try force quitting messages and other apps then restart your phone and try again.  Learn how to Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch here.

Looking forward to details!

Hi ThatThreeGuy,

Thank you for your follow up. Does this happen with multiple contacts? Can you test multiple contacts? If it is only happening with one contact, try creating a new thread for that contact and try again.

Were you able to force quit all apps and restart your iPhone?

You should check for any YouTube updates in the App Store. Learn How to manually update apps on your Apple device here.

Hope that helps!
