I am buying a new mac today in store and plan to use migration assistant. Do I need to backup my old mac before I bring it in to get the new one? I am trading it in

It's a very good idea to back it up. You can then restore through your time machine backup. Make sure the software is up to date first. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203981


If you're using migration assistant, you'll need to have both devices together.
