Oh, I am sorry!
I misread your issue entirely. I thought you had two Macs with an external optical drive and one Mac didn't work properly with the external optical drive.
Have you read Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support?

I appreciate the answer. I tried it but no results, in fact the dvd doesn't even show as a blank, although cds still open. The dvds do open on an old mac, so I can copy them off that way, a much longer process. I guess the iMac, a 2011 edition, which can handle no later OS than High Sierra 10.13.6, is ancient.
Thanks for the reply.
I haven't seen that article but I'll will read it now. I'll be getting a new Mac soon and I'm planning on getting an M-Disc/BlueRay burner. I don't know why they no longer have built in cd drives. BlueRay discs are good for about 20 years and M-Discs will last hundreds of years and are the perfect back up media. The government is using them, so optical drives will not be going away.

If you do want an external optical drive with Blu-ray and M-DISC, the OWC Mercury Pro 16X Blu-ray Solution - MacSales.com (OWC) would work well for you.
Although, for your Time Machine backup, discs cannot be used, so you'll need a good-quality desktop-class external drive for that.

Run a cleaning disc in the optical drive a couple of times. Then try again.
Is the DVD a data disk?
And that model is considered obsolete by Apple, not vintage. I know I had one.
Try restarting in Safe Mode and then retest. Also try the media in another computer.
What Mac is having this issue? What is its year and current macOS version?
What brand and model of optical drive are you using?
Jack
My 27" iMac , a 2011 model 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, running High Sierra 10.13.6, the latest it can handle. The optical drive is built in, and I don't know anything about it.
