why has a disc icon named data appeared on my desktop?
Transferred my stuff from an intel imac to a M1 iMac. A second disc icon now appears on my desktop and its named "data." I can eject it but it reappears if I restart.

Open Disk Utility and see what you have listed under your boot drive. My boot drive, named Toad Hall, has this:
The Data volume is where your account and files are. The other volume is read only for security purposes and is where the system resides. You should not be able to unmount the Data drive so you may have an extra volume named Data which is not part of the normal setup.
Have you opened the Data volume to see what's in it?
This “data” file/disc isn’t associated with the boot drive. In disk utility it appears by itself. If I open it there doesn’t appear to have anything in it. I did a reinstall of the system and it still appears when I boot up.
What is it's capacity? Could it be a flash drive that's connected?
Post a screenshot of it's Info pane.
That looks like a volume of your internal SSD boot drive. I have no idea of what's going on. Since it's new call Apple Support and get them involved.
Ok. Thanks.
