Whenever I click on update, my macbook starts to download files and then it displays this dialog:
MacOS Catalina is installed.
What is causing this and what do I need to do in order to install updates?

If this is a privately owned mac this should not occur. Please elaborate.
That is NOT an Apple dialog...
Where and how are you clicking to update? Be specific.
You should get Big Sur at the mac App Store, and by clicking on upgrade you should be taken to the Software Update pane of System Preferences.
Do not try to download Big Sur from anywhere else.
I click on the Software Update button that displays when I click on the Apple->About this Mac.
In the button below I click on Upgrade Now
Then the dialog I posted above appears. I'm checking with someone at my workplace to see if they have restricted updates. Another colleague who updated her macbook pro didn't run into this issue.
Is this a managed MacBook Pro where the service provider determines through an MDM server or configuration profile what and when you can install anything? Do you own this Mac?
Thanks for your quick replies. It turns out that the dialog came from my workplace "Big Sur is still not supported due to issues with the FollowMe printers and network login issue."
