iPad Pro dies when I plug my pencil in

I’ve had a 12.9” 2nd gen ipad pro (model A1670) for 3-4 years, and recently when I plug my pen into the port to charge it, my iPad immediately shuts off and won’t turn back on for some time (first time it seemed to be at least an hour).

The first time it happened my iPad was at 51% battery, second time maybe 37%. My pencil I think is at 1%.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a cause/solution for it?

Edit: Not sure if this is related, but I noticed the same day that my iPad isn’t charging. I’m using new chargers (one is standard issue Apple, another is third party).
