duplicate photos in Photos

I use Photos, Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC. When importing photos via Airplay from another Apple device I get numerous duplicate images in Photos. How do I stop this? I see some discussion from 5-6 years ago and am hoping that Apple has figured this out by now.

Hi - airplay isn't an import method. Do you mean air drop?

I have to say - there is not much sense in using both photos and Lightroom. They are apps doing the same job - image organisation and basic editing.

Are you transferring images by different methods to your mac - eg by USB or by iCloud. Do you also use the Lightroom cloud sync services? If so what is synced when, by what app to where?

Tony, your information is very helpful. I am trying to sort all of this out in my mind. If I gave up the synching in Icloud I would not have access to the iphone photos on my other devices (Ipad, Mac). I would gain access if I manually transferred the images to Lightroom CC or to Lightroom Classic and then put them in a collection which would synch to my devices. I need to think this through carefully. Thanks.

Tony, you are correct, I meant Air Drop. I think I have figured out some things but others remain a mystery. It appears that my duplication of images are happening in Lightroom Classic, not in Photos. My wife took many images that I wanted to bring into Lightroom. I moved her images to my Mac using Air Drop. Then imported those images into Lightroom Classic. I can't figure out why I am getting lots of duplicate images in the folder that receives all my mobile uploads in LR. Then I realized that the duplicates are virtual copies. I will need to get advice from Adobe on that matter. The reason I use both programs is that when I take an image with my iphone camera I just assumed that it goes to the ICloud and then gets synched across my Apple devices. Am I able to take an iphone image and have it upload directly to the Adobe Cloud for downloading into Lightroom? I am a fairly advanced photographer and use Lightroom, Photoshop, and a variety of other editing software to create my images. I don't think that I can accomplish this level with Photos. Thanks for your help.

Hi

You will need to check with Adobe support/help to see if they have a phone app that will sync your camera roll with Adobe Cloud - or otherwise automatically transfer, though I wouldn't be surprised if they do. If they do then you may be better dropping photos altogether.

Alternatively you could stop using iCloud to sync, and transfer images from your phone to a mac via USB using the image capture app (rather than photos). Image capture will just transfer the images to a suitable folder, which can then be imported into lightroom, bypassing photos and iCloud altogether. This would then be a similar workflow to how you would use any camera.
