Minecraft won't launch from disk

I have an M1 MacBook Air. I bought Minecraft and downloaded the launch disk and moved it to the applications folder, but when I try to install it it gives me the error message "Unable to start Minecraft, if you are using a dmg, please drag to applications and try again". I've tried restarting but it didn't help. As far as I can tell there isn't much in the way of instructions to download, an I doing something wrong?
