This is becoming a very common complaint with newer Macs. The USB SuperDrive has not been updated since June 2012 and cannot directly connect to a USB-C Mac; an adaptor is mandatory.

If those fail to help, especially the part about having the "right side up," I recommend returning the drive for a refund and buying an aftermarket model with newer technology and an independent power supply. I am considering this one based on recommendations from senior contributors here:

It's advantages over Apple's outdated model are many:
Not to mention that one does not need a sleek "portable" or "mobile" drive for a big desktop computer like an iMac.

It's advantages over Apple's outdated model are many:
It has its own power supply to eliminate low power conditions
• it is based on proven and reliable tray-load technology
• It connectivity is USB-3, not the now-obsolete USB-2 of the Apple model
• The USB cable is a separate part. If it is damaged, you simply get a new cable, not a new drive.
• USB-3 makes it faster than the SuperDrive.
• It is US$5 cheaper than Apple's
+1 on the OWC optical drive. Actually that's the model I have.

Are you using an Apple official USB to USB-C adapter?
Jack
Seems to an issue lately with the new 24" iMac as it works fine on my new MBA M1 Mac.
The Apple USB - USB C adapter works perfectly with the Apple Superdrive on my iMac 24".
