Unable to download item please try again later

I keep getting the error pop up that states “Unable to download Item, please try again later” options of “done or retry”.

I have researched everything I can and gone through all settings to no avail. Only I haven’t done is a full restore. I have:

  • checked App Store for updates
  • toggled automatic updates on and off
  • toggled all updates between cellular and WiFi
  • Checked music and iTunes
  • checked updates of software (running 14.7.1)
  • turned off background app refresh and turned on. Restarted phone every time

older threads talk about putting it into airplane mode when error screen pops up but that is not an option here. Only allows you to select “done or retry”

anyone have any suggestions? Experiencing the same thing? Anything? Without having to update phones.

thanks in advance

This article does not fix anything. The “Unable to Download Retry” error message occurs after purchasing certain music or media from iTunes. The way to remedy this annoying problem is :

1. Download iMazing Software to a desktop computer

2. Open iMazing

3. Click Free Trial

4. Connect iPad or iPhone to your desktop

4. Find the File System Folder on iMazing for your connectediOS device.

5. Open the Download Folder, I think it’s under System

6. Open any media and Camera subfolders

7. Delete any files that have squib.lte in the name

8. The End

Verified this fixed the issue for me, don’t buy a new phone to solve their bug!

FINALLY SOLVED!! (May 2022)

Had this problem for a few months until now. Here's what to do ...

I tried a full reset, but it didn't resolver the issue. However, it brought me onto the right path.

I tried signing in with a different Apple ID - no annoying message.

So, I realised that the issue had more to do with the account than with the actual device itself.

Long story short ... I went on the chat with Apple support and asked them to check from their end whether I did in fact have any downloads pending, and asked them to clear all.

They looked into it, cleared all downloads (including updates) that were pending, et voilá! I logged in and out a few times with my Apple ID, did a restart ... no more annoying messages ever since.

This occurs when trying to reinstall offloaded apps; it affects apps that are not compatible with the version of iOS installed on an iPhone 6:

Unable to Download Item

Please try again later.

A workaround is to manually reinstall each app using App Store. For each app, this dialog appears:

Download an older version of this app?

The current version require iOS 14.0 or later, but you can download the last compatible version.

Tapping Download makes the app install normally.

It is not necessary to delete the app first. Deleting it will destroy any saved documents and data.

This issue will arise when a user enables automatic offloading of apps or restores a backup, so it's possible that many apps will be affected.

This problem started when I moved all my data and Sim card from from one old iphone to another (both were iPhone 6s). Several of my apps wouldn't open and displayed the message "Unable to download item please try again later".

To fix this, I deleted the app, then downloaded the app from the App store. In the App store, I got a message that said "Download an older version of this app? The current version requires iOS __ or later, but you can download the last compatible version." After doing that, the apps worked again.

Depending on the app in question, the message displayed different iOS versions.

Update with possible fix:

So I used the chat feature on Apple Support/Genius Bar to create a case related to this, and they had me connect with a live technician on the phone. They were actually helpful and spoke English.

She had me try several things we have already discussed here and ran a "diagnostic" on her end, but that didn't solve anything.

She spoke to some co-workers and they suggested to wipe the phone (with a current back up in place) and then restore it as a new phone, while only re-downloading photos/messages/emails/keychain etc. but NOT any apps. They seemed to acknowledge this was a software/app problem but that was about it.

At this point I told her why not let's try it.

Took about 30 minutes to wipe and restore everything, she verified that it worked successfully on her end. I just had to go through the painful process of redownloading all my apps and re-opening them. Thankfully I had all my passwords and settings saved from the app store.

Through the 2 restarts yesterday and all my reconfiguring last night I have NOT seen the error message in the last 24 hours. Knock on wood.

Hopefully this corrected the issue, phone seems to be working a bit faster with the wipe as well.

Time will tell, I'll be holding my breath.

Okay everyone. I am 99.9 % sure that I fixed this issue on my phone! I’m not sure this will work for everyone, but here’s what I discovered:

The “cannot download” annoying as **** message occurred immediately after I did the latest iOS update.

After the update I noticed many of my apps that are the least used had the shortcut icons on my phone, but had the little arrow near them to “re-download” from the App Store.

So I thought- what if this message is bc it’s trying to re-download these apps from the App Store and there’s an issue?

I did just that - started downloading all of my apps, and discovered one of the apps I had was “no longer available” via the App Store. It was Ticketfly, who apparently was bought out by another company and the app “went away” in 2019. Had to Google it. Who knew..

soooooo I deleted that particular app and y’all…. THE “cannot download “ message has STOPPED. It’s been three days ERROR MESSAGE FREE. Not once has it popped up.

so go through your phone- maybe you also have some old out of date app or no longer available apps that your device is trying feverishly to DL and it CANT hence this message.

So that’s all I got, but it has worked for me. I hope it does for you too.

Good luck and God Speed!

I had a large file that was sitting in the cloud waiting for download in the Pages app on my iPhone. I apparently had not completed that download. When I clicked to download it resolved the problem. For those who don’t have pages, do you have another document folder that download files go to that maybe haven’t fully downloaded?

My wife was having this same issue with her iPhone 12 and I believe I was able to fix it.

I read all of the posts about what to do to fix the issue but like others could not get it into airplane mode. When the error came up, I pressed the lock button on the top right. From the Lock Screen, I swiped the screen down and put it in airplane mode. Then I unlocked the phone and the error immediately popped back up. Since the phone was now in airplane mode, I was able to click done. After about 60 seconds I turned off airplane mode.

The error had been popping up at least once an hour before but has not popped up in 2 days. Hopefully this was a permanent fix.

I'm on page 2 reporting this back in October '21 after having this for quite a long time. Here to award @macuserjeff all the points. May your beers always be the frostiest. I used Imazing 2 to delete of the squib files. Thank you for helping my 11 Pro Max not be the most annoying piece of tech I own. Can't say I've seen it for ~3 days.

Copying for less digging:

1. Download iMazing Software to a desktop computer from the app store

2. Open iMazing 2

3. Click Free Trial

4. Connect iPad or iPhone to your desktop

4. Find the File System Folder on iMazing for your connectediOS device.

5. Open the Download Folder, I think it’s under System (it was one of the 4 folders)

6. Open any media and Camera subfolders (it was one of the 4 folders)

7. Delete any files that have squib.lte in the name

8. The End

I FINALLY fixed my problem with this issue, at least I hope. It has been 2 days and so far so good. I had done all of the suggested steps from APPLE Nothing worked. The message would always pop up in the morning after charging my phone. So I knew it must be an automatic update from the APP store. I checked everything, and all seemed to have updated just fine. Then after months, the mystery is solved. In checking my daily updates by scrolling down the list under my account, I noticed that under one certain App there was a message in fine print which said update this APP, even though it said it had been updated. I checked “update” button. It said it updated again, but the message remained. Soo, I totally deleted the APP, and downloaded it again. It was (EBAY). I must have had an old version that was not compatible with my latest phone, even though it looked the same.?? I just know I no longer have that annoying message pop up. Yes, very bizarre. I hope this helps somebody else. It has been EXTREMELY frustrating.

I understand. The pop-up says “unable to download items, retry or done” and I would occasionally get notifications about “unable to download digital booklet” so I researched on where digital booklets were stored- and it was in the “books” app, which I never use. So I deleted that app off of my phone and it has stopped trying to download the item. And I have not received a notification since.

Ok, I may be barking up wrong tree here but it may be worth your while.

I’ve been getting the pop up for at least 9 months, iPhone 12. I’ve been searching the web with no luck waiting for various updates with no change there. I get them multiple times a day and always after re starts.

So reading through this post today I had a bit of a thought, apps that have been off loaded but their icon still on phone with the little download symbol.

I found about 7-8 on my phone and deleted 3 and downloaded the rest!

move re started 3 times and NO pop ups.

That was about 10 hours ago and no pop ups. 🤔

I may be celebrating too early but it’s worth a go.

Same iOS 15.4.1. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to update the non supported apps, "Update Required", this is what I did, and it worked for me. Forget trying to update the app, just delete it from you iPhone or iPad. Log on to the App store, and search for your non working app. Download and install the app again. During the download process, you'll get a message that the app is not supported on iOS 51.4.1. "Do you want to download a previous version?". Click Yes. It's that simple. It worked for me. Hopefully, you'll have the same success.
