Unable to download item please try again later

I keep getting the error pop up that states “Unable to download Item, please try again later” options of “done or retry”.

I have researched everything I can and gone through all settings to no avail. Only I haven’t done is a full restore. I have:

  • checked App Store for updates
  • toggled automatic updates on and off
  • toggled all updates between cellular and WiFi
  • Checked music and iTunes
  • checked updates of software (running 14.7.1)
  • turned off background app refresh and turned on. Restarted phone every time

older threads talk about putting it into airplane mode when error screen pops up but that is not an option here. Only allows you to select “done or retry”

anyone have any suggestions? Experiencing the same thing? Anything? Without having to update phones.

thanks in advance

FINALLY SOLVED!! (May 2022)

Had this problem for a few months until now. Here's what to do ...

I tried a full reset, but it didn't resolver the issue. However, it brought me onto the right path.

I tried signing in with a different Apple ID - no annoying message.

So, I realised that the issue had more to do with the account than with the actual device itself.

Long story short ... I went on the chat with Apple support and asked them to check from their end whether I did in fact have any downloads pending, and asked them to clear all.

They looked into it, cleared all downloads (including updates) that were pending, et voilá! I logged in and out a few times with my Apple ID, did a restart ... no more annoying messages ever since.

Wow, at least your message points to something.  I posted here a bit ago. Since then I have been able to hook up with an Apple rep who is my case manager. It took a lot of work to get to this point. They are working with their engineering dept. trying to figure this out. They are frustrated as well. They've done some advance logging with my phone to see if they can catch why it's happening. It has been a process, but I will say that I've been very satisfied with Apple's customer service and dedication in trying to resolve this issue. I'll post more if and when I receive positive news.

I just saw your post above jstevens4488. Sounds like we're both going through the same process. Cool!

I've been quietly monitoring this forum as I've dealt with this for going on a year now. I find it to be sort of insane that internal Apple engineers cannot get to the root of the issue. Makes you wonder if they are really looking to sort this out or what is really going on. How difficult can it be to see what triggers this message if you engineer or write code?

Ahh, to go back to the original Apple days under Jobs when everything worked perfect or when bugs were dealt with swiftly.

Yes. Much prior to iOS15. This has been an issue for awhile to be honest. I thought if enough people complain they would push through a fix fast. Now after monitoring this forum and refreshing the page daily, I am pretty blown away that Apple simply hasn't nipped this in the butt. The root of the issue must be more complex or the right department hasn't looked into seeing the root of the prompt and undoing it. Either way, there are no actual solutions here as of yet just more and more users experiencing this.

This has been going on with my iphone xr for about 3 months and it’s driving me nuts. I even did a full restore and downloaded a recent back up and it is still happening. At this point i guess i have to live with it as the only thing else i can think of is to get a new **** phone, but who can afford that these days?!

I’m on iPhone Xs with 15.1 iOS. Been having this issue for the last week. I’ve not requested to download anything. I’ve done everything everyone else has. Years ago I worked with a retired Air Force Colonel who told me when all else failed, pilots would turn everything off and on. I’m thinking the equal with an iPhone is to take note of all the apps I use, and restore factory settings. This has been that annoying. before I do, has anyone else tried that?
