Unable to download item please try again later

I keep getting the error pop up that states “Unable to download Item, please try again later” options of “done or retry”.

I have researched everything I can and gone through all settings to no avail. Only I haven’t done is a full restore. I have:

  • checked App Store for updates
  • toggled automatic updates on and off
  • toggled all updates between cellular and WiFi
  • Checked music and iTunes
  • checked updates of software (running 14.7.1)
  • turned off background app refresh and turned on. Restarted phone every time

older threads talk about putting it into airplane mode when error screen pops up but that is not an option here. Only allows you to select “done or retry”

anyone have any suggestions? Experiencing the same thing? Anything? Without having to update phones.

thanks in advance

FINALLY SOLVED!! (May 2022)

Had this problem for a few months until now. Here's what to do ...

I tried a full reset, but it didn't resolver the issue. However, it brought me onto the right path.

I tried signing in with a different Apple ID - no annoying message.

So, I realised that the issue had more to do with the account than with the actual device itself.

Long story short ... I went on the chat with Apple support and asked them to check from their end whether I did in fact have any downloads pending, and asked them to clear all.

They looked into it, cleared all downloads (including updates) that were pending, et voilá! I logged in and out a few times with my Apple ID, did a restart ... no more annoying messages ever since.

Just chiming in that I’ve had this same annoying issue with my iPhone XR for almost two months. A Google search led me to this discussion. I’ve tried viewing download files and disabling automatic downloads, but no luck. After reading this thread, I’m thinking my next step is make sure I’ve backed up everything & take it to the Genius Bar. Will post here after with anything helpful.

Have had this same issue for months on an 11 Pro Max. I have restarted fresh and from an icloud backup with no luck. I've tried everything in this thread too. Deleting/clearing hasn't helped. Relogging into icloud hasn't helped. Happens a lot in my most frequent apps, especially around photos. Really wish Apple would catch and patch this. Software developer and ex QA, and I've tried a lot to get this to go away

Hello ~ I wonder now by seeing all you have gone through …and you have really gone through it…if there is a possibility that it may be something that could be connected to the email address associated with your Apple ID? Just a thought. If you do find a solution and I do so hope that you do …could you post back with your solution? Good luck :)

I had a long call with Apple Support yesterday. They took some diagnostics off of my phone to see if they can find the source and are supposed to get back to me next week. I told them of this forum thread and the rep Ryan (who seemed genuinely helpful and interested in getting this problem fixed) noted the forum link and is going to add it to the file he forwards on to engineers so they can see this isn’t an isolated issue.

I'd like to know the process of how you reset your phone if you recall. I tried wiping my phone clean as if it were a brand new phone. I chose to manually set it up...not using iCloud via my phone's WiFi, or by connecting to my PC. I then added my apps back from the App Store. Now all of my apps need to be organized the way I like and I have to sign into everything again. A laborious process as you mentioned. It was looking good for about 3 hours today and then the dreaded message appeared. I almost cried in my beer. Over the past couple of days, I have spoken with Apple Support 2x via chat and then with a rep on the phone after the chat got me nowhere. I think I need to hit the Apple Store. I'm at the end of my rope. I hope they do what someone mentioned in this forum...send us a replacement phone.

Thanks, BmWood!  You rock! Your process sounds like what I did too.  Thanks so much for detailing it out.  It's greatly appreciated.  As of today, I have not seen the dreaded message.  Maybe my phone just needed to sync back up with iCloud. I did notice my Notes coming in very slowly yesterday. A few good things came out of this process, one as you mentioned, my phone seems faster. Two, I didn't download all of the apps I had before as I never used some. It sure was a time suck though. I'll post again if I see the message pop-up.

Thanks again!
