Unable to open photos from iPhone on PC

Suddenly I'm unable to view photos on the iPhone with Windows photo app or windows file explorer. I can see the thumbnails on the computer but they won't open or let me save them to the PC. Have been copying photos from phone to pc for years without trouble. Windows photo app says "can't open this file because the format is currently unsupported or the file is corrupted.

I can toggle settings on the phone photos to show heic or jpg format with Automatic or Keep Originals settings. Neither works properly.

Windows, Windows 10

I have found a fix for this as follows:

If you would prefer that your iPhone camera saves images in JPG format, you can on your iphone go to Settings/Camera/Formats and set the 'Most Compatible' option. Your camera will now save all images a JPGs - but be aware that your images will now be larger in filesize.

Had another session with Microsoft Tier 3 support this morning. They have confirmed it's a bug in windows and will be addressing it in a future release/patch. Apparently they are getting more and more reports of the issue.

No fix for now. Just a workaround. You have to import the pictures from the phone using iCloud, or something like the Windows photo app. Once the pictures are on the local machine or cloud service (off of the phone) then you can work with them normally.

No idea on how long it will take to patch. Likely a month or two. At least we can stop spinning our wheels until they get it fixed.

I was going to try to uninstall Microsoft Photos app and then reinstall to see if if this would fix the problem. I was not able to uninstall through the settings app for Microsoft Photos, the uninstall button was greyed out. I tired also to go the control panel/programs/programs and features and uninstall programs for Microsoft Photos. It was not listed in the line up. I also believe Microsoft Photos is corrupt.

My fix in the meantime:

I went ahead and installed One Photo Viewer on my PC which windows 10 supports. I selected as the default photo viewer. It works fine. Its a temporary fix till Microsoft Photo is fixed

@relayer246 - Yes, that did the trick for me too. Just did the upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 and now I can view and copy photos from my iphone 12 to my PC without any issues. Also in Windows 11 I can view HEIC files directly in the Windows Photos app. I also was having the issue that when unplugging my phone from the PC's USB port that I got multiple error windows saying the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected. This too cleared right up. Windows 11 appears to have fixed the iphone issues that Windows 10 had

Hi all as at 12/10/2021 the problem still exists. I used Microsoft Photos and used the import facility. This worked and the files were fine. Clearly Microsoft aren't going to be that interested in updating Windows 10 again when Windows 11 is around the corner. All Apple updates up to and including the post recent one 15.1 (?) do not seem to address it so they are either ignoring it or continuing to lay the blame at Microsoft's door. Once Windows 11 (bugs and all) is online then it will be interesting to see if the same issues exists.

Hello all,

I read thru all of this and just could not get it to work. I copied several directories over this weekend and got to one directory that had a bunch of corrupt files that I could not open or copy. So, I unplugged everything as I had been copying for about 20 minutes. Then switched the iPhone to a different USB port and voila, all the corrupt files from before were just fine and I was able to copy. So - I don't know if it was the port or really just the amount of files I was copying (1,000 or more photos). Try both of these and hopefully one will work.

So Ive had this same problem and my husband changed a setting and now they’re working! It’s worth a try to see if it helps you too!

  1. Open File Explorer
  2. right click the folder that you are storing your pictures in and select Properties
  3. select the Customize tab.
  4. where it says optimize this folder - change it to pictures. (Mine previously showed videos)

Hope that works for you too!!

I've tried multiple settings on the camera and image formats. Mine is currently set to most compatible and it makes no difference. The problem still exists. Next step is to try and get some help from Microsoft. Several folks seem to believe the problem started with a windows update. Apple denies they've seen this issue.

Luckily I can import the images to my computer with the Photos program in Windows. But it's very cumbersome as opposed to picking a specific image and just copying to the computer where I want it.

I spent several hours on the phone with Apple support with three different agents. They all pointed the finger back at Microsoft. I've so far found nothing online about the issue. I can import the pictures using the photos app -- but it's cumbersome to sort through the pictures that way. I like to view the pictures on the computer, keep what I want on the phone, delete off the phone what I don't want, and copy specific pictures to folders on my pc. With the import process I have to sort through everything twice -- once on the phone and once on the PC.

They always first ask if it works in iCloud. I don't use iCloud and don't plan to because I have a lot of storage available locally and with other providers. Very frustrating.

When I unplug the phone it kicks out an error saying the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected. It's then stuck in a loop and will keep kicking out that error even after the phone is unplugged. It's related to a windows process called Shell Infrastructure Host. Apple searched for those errors in their database and found nothing. Maybe it's too early for them to have seen the problem -- but it's hard to believe that.

You should be able to import the photos with the windows photo app. That's what I'm doing as a work around now. Using iCloud is not the only/primary option as you were told. The problem with the photo app import is that you have to import everything or just the most recent pictures. You can't selectively and easily deal with just a photo or two like we used to be able to do with file explorer from the phone itself without importing using the photos app.

The Microsoft support person I worked with at the tier 3 support -- which is the highest you can get for a consumer -- has acknowledged they have a problem and will work to fix it in a future update.

I'm having this issue as well.

Photos often won't display or get an error message "photos can't open this file because the format is currently unsupported or the file is corrupted" in explorer via usb.

When I unplug the phone get an error saying the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected. It then seems to loop on this error message for a while even though already unplugged.

I've had to swap to downloading from icloud. Not as convenient but only work around that has worked for me.
