"Some purchases might require that you have a credit card on file, even if you use your Apple ID balance to make the purchase." - from: What you can buy with your Apple ID balance --> https://support.apple.com/HT211187

For a variety of reasons Apple will almost always require a functional payment method such as a credit or debit card be present when downloading anything from the iTunes or App Stores that isn't totally free, even if the item will be paid for with Apple Account balance. The only solution to satisfy this requirement is to add a valid payment method.

Create or use an Apple ID without a payment method - https://support.apple.com/HT204034

I use my account with no card but I have never downloaded anything except entirely free apps.

Have the subscriptions also run their course and expired?

How to cancel a subscription from Apple - Apple Support

Subscriptions will continue until the expiration date. Canceling them just tells them not to renew after that date. To have it end before that date you need to contact Apple and explain you need it to end immediately.

Ah, this is where knowing the goal helps. :-)

This document explains how to 'Change, add, [review,] or remove Apple ID payment methods' on an Apple mobile device, a Mac, or a PC; click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT201266

- If you are updating an old card and have ongoing subscriptions you may need to first add the new card and make it the primary payment method before deleting the old card.

Ohhh very nice… it is very helpful… so let me see if I have understood it correctly…I cannot use Apple balance (no debit/credit card ) for the subscriptions. It seems that if I need to remove the current payment method ( which is a card ) I have to add another payment method ( new card ).

many thanks in advance for your replies.
